about
This most beautiful of songs dates from the middle of the C18th and was composed by the poet Cathal Buí Mac Giolla Ghunna from the borders of Fermanagh, Cavan and Leitrim. A self-mocking and whimsical insight into his addiction to drink, when asked by his partner to give it up he points to the bonnán buí (yellow bittern) lying dead on the frozen shore of Lough Macnean and explains that the poor bird expired from the want of a drink and that he doesn’t want to share the same fate. The air here is taken from Edward Bunting’s 1840 publication Ancient Music of Ireland and the words from Céad de Cheolta Uladh, Énrí Ó Muireasa’s first publication from his collection in 1917. We have kept the arrangement simple and uncluttered to allow Sorcha’s presentation of the air and words to shine. Aoibheann’s playing on wire-strung harp, the instrument traditionally associated with the rendition of Gaelic verse, is particularly fitting.
lyrics
An Bonnán Buí
Cathal Buí Mac Giolla Ghunna a chum
A bhonnáin bhuí, sé mo léan do luí,
Is do chnámha sínte tar éis do ghrinn;
Is chan easpa bí ach díobháil dí
A d’fhág i do luí thú ar chúl do chinn;
Is measa liom féin ná scrios na Traoi
Tú bheith ‘do luí ar leaca lom',
Is nach ndearna tú díth ná dolaidh sa ‘tír,
Is nárbh fhearr leat fíon ná uisce poll.
A bhonnáin álainn, sé mo mhíle crá thú,
Do chúl ar lár amuigh romham sa tslí;
Is gurb iomaí lá a chluininn do ghrág
Ar an láib is tú ag ól na dí.
‘S é an ní a deir cách lé do dheartháir Cathal,
Go bhfuighidh sé bás mar siúd más fíor;
Ach ní hamhlaidh atá, siúd an préachán breá
Chuaigh a dh'éag ar ball gan aon bhraon dí.
A bhonnáin óig, sé mo mhíle brón
Tú bheith sínte fuar i measc na dtom,
‘S na lucha móra ag triall 'un do thórraimh,
Ag déanamh spóirt agus pléisiúr ann.
Is dá gcuirfeá scéala fá mo dhéin-sa
Go raibh tú i ngéibheann nó i mbroid gan bhrí,
Do bhrisfinn béim duit ar Loch Mhic an Éin
A fhliuchadh do bhéal is do chorp istigh.
Chan iad bhur n-éanlaith atá mé ag éagnach,
An lon, an smaolach nó an chorr ghlas,
Ach mo bhonnán buí a bhí lán de chroí,
Is gur chosúil liom féin í i nós ‘s i ndath.
Bhíodh sé go síoraí ag ól na dí,
Is deirtear go mbímse mar sin seal;
Níl aon deoir dá bhfuighinnse nach ligfinn síos,
Ar eagla go bhfuighinnse bás den tart.
‘S é d’iarr mo stór orm ligean den ól,
Nó nach mbeinnse beo ach seal beag gearr,
Ach dúirt mé léi go dtug sí an bhréag,
Is gurbh fhaide mo shaolsa an deoch úd a fháil.
Nach bhfeiceann sibh éan an phíobáin réidh
A chuaigh a dh’éag den tart ar ball?
Is a chomharsana chléibh, fliuchaidh bhur mbéal,
Óir ní bhfuighidh sibh braon i ndiaidh bhur mbáis.
