about

Déaglán learnt this one as a teenager on summer visits to the Donegal Gaeltacht and passed it on to his daughter Méabh who makes it her own with her sympathetic and distinctive vocal harmony and guitar accompaniment. It is more commonly known as Buachaill Ón Éirne meaning ‘a lad from the Erne’ but here Méabh sings Buachaill Uí Néill meaning ‘a lad of the O’Neill clan’, the title it receives in Céad de Cheolta Uladh. As Ó Muireasa explains “It is heard all over Ulster and contains some very beautiful verses. It appears to be the lament of a wild reckless fellow of the O’Neills who has lost the girl of his heart through his own folly, and is beginning to see through the error of his ways, though as yet unrepentant.”

lyrics

Buachaill Uí Néill

Buachaill Uí Néill mé a bhréagfadh bruinneall deas óg,
Is tá an leabhar ar mo bhéal nach ndéanfaidh do mhalairt go deo;
Le m'athair gan bhréag dhá thaobh an ghleanna is Tír Eoghain,
Is dá gcreidfí mo scéal ba liom féin an Contae Mhaigh Eo.

Buachailleacht bó, mo leo, níor chleacht mé ariamh,
Ach ag imirt 's ag ól le hógmhná deasa fá shliabh;
Má chaill mé mo stór ní dócha gur chaill mé mo chiall,
Is ní mó do phóg ná'n bhróg atá ar caitheamh le bliain.

A thaisce 's a stór ná pós thusa an seanduine liath,
Ach pós an fear óg, mo leo, mur’ mairfeadh sé ach bliain,
Nó beidh tú go fóill gan ua nó mac os do cheann,
A shilfeadh aon deor tráthnóna nó ar maidin go trom.

An uair a théim síos bíonn na mílte fáilte romham,
Is nuair a thagaim aníos bíonn mo chroí istigh lán den bhrón;
Och, tuirse mo chroí ar an té a bhain domhsa mo stór,
Agus d'fhág mé liom féin go brách ag sileadh na ndeor.
