about

This set came about after an inspirational trip Aoibheann, Ríoghnach and her sister Róise made to Acaill in Mayo one November for Laoise Kelly’s harp festival, armed with three wire-strung harps and a massive suitcase that couldn’t be left behind, all inside a two-door Peugeot 207. ‘Na Deirfiúreacha’ was the name sometimes given to the two side by side G strings on the ancient Irish harp. This was composed by Aoibheann for the two sisters Ríoghnach and Róise. Aoibheann was often in the company of Geordie Hanna and remembers his singing of The Lisburn Lass. Ríoghnach later sang his version of the song, and it can definitely be heard as the inspiration for the first part of Na Deirfiúireacha, meaning ‘The Sisters’. The air, like many good airs, has been arranged and rearranged and adapted to various sets of lyrics, probably the oldest of these The Parting Glass as sung by Joe Holmes and Len Graham, and speeded up for the Schottische, The Peacock’s Feathers. The arrangement played here is quite different in places while maintaining an unconscious familiarity. As Aoibheann says herself “anyone who has composed will know that feeling of ‘I wonder is this original or just something I’ve heard before’. It brings to mind something Brian Vallely once said to me, whether he remembers or not, that ‘nothing is original’. Sorry Brian if I’ve mis-quoted you!”
