about

Collected by Edward Bunting at the end of the C18th and also to be found in the Carolan, the Life, Times and Music of an Irish Harper by Donal O’Sullivan, a collection of compositions by famous harper and composer Turlough O’Carolan (1670-1738). The tune was composed by the great man in honour of his host Thomas Morres Jones aka Bumper Squire Jones whilst on a visit north. Jones’ grand house was just a few fields from where Déaglán and Aoibheann live in Moneyglass near the village of Toome in County Antrim. O’Carolan’s words celebrate the squire's generous and vivacious nature and were composed at the end of a night’s carousing, hence the title Pléaráca Jones meaning ‘Jones’ revelry’.
We follow with a jig composed by Aoibheann for her firstborn Sorcha, Ar Lá do Bhreithe.

lyrics

Pléaraca Jones - Thomas Morres Jones
Toirdhealbhach Ó Cearbhalláin a chum

Sé an compliment ceoil don óigfhear breá tréan
Thar uaisle na hÉireann is aonrí Thír Eoghain.
Ní mór linn sin dó ó chroí mór na féile,
Ní ghabhann sé choíche gan daoine ‘bheith ag ól.

Sé Guaire le féile le huaisle ‘s le réidhe
Is ’s é deir fir Éireann nach léir leo ach spórt.
Níl gloine nó bumper, níl buidéal nó tumbler,
Nach n-ólfainn gan chontúirt ar Bumper Squire Jones
