Another great song from Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin’s A Hidden Ulster sung here by Aoibheann’s brother and Ríoghnach’s dadaí Tarlac Ó Conghalaigh of Armagh. This song tells the story of the capture and death of the famous Armagh raparee Séamus Mac Murfaidh, leader of an outlaw band in the Slieve Gullion area in the first half of the C18th. According to local tradition Séamus was betrayed by a jealous lover who drowned herself afterwards, consumed by remorse. A committed Irish republican throughout his life, Tarlac identified with the sentiment expressed in the song, the struggle of those oppressed by colonialism to free themselves. Sadly Tarlac passed away not long after this recording was made. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.
