about

Collected by Edward Bunting from Tyrone harper Arthur O’Néill at the Belfast Harp Festival of 1792, and included in Bunting’s hugely influential publication of Irish harp music The Ancient Music of Ireland. Arthur O’Neill stated that Seabhac na hÉirne (translated to English as “The Hawk of Ballyshannon”) was composed by the legendary C17th harper Ruairí Dall Ó Catháin from the north coast of Ulster. Also known as Port Atholl, Ó Catháin’s tune is one of two airs in the harping repertoire going by that name. There is also a song to this air, the words of which were composed by Turlough O’Carolan. Aoibheann plays the air on a copy of the Downhill Harp, the cláirseach or wire-strung harp famously played by Magilligan harper Donnchadh Ó hÁmsaigh aka Denis a’Hempson, now preserved in the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. The harp was made by Cormac O Kelly of Ballinascreen County Derry around the year 1702.
